Copper Price Today — LME Basis for Zambia & DRC Copper

Every serious copper transaction — cathodes or concentrate, Zambia or DRC — is priced against the London Metal Exchange at the time of offer. This page explains exactly how that price is built, what a fair offer looks like, and how to get a live quotation for your tonnage and destination.

Copper Cathode Price Today — How It Is Quoted

Copper cathodes are quoted as LME Grade A reference price ± premium/discount. The LME Official Price is set every trading day and is the benchmark the entire physical trade settles against. What is negotiated is not the benchmark but the adjustment to it:

    LME-registered brands

Trade at LME or a premium — the brand is deliverable against exchange contracts, which carries value.

    Non-LME African brands

Equivalent Cu-CATH-1 quality from Zambia and DRC typically prices at a modest discount to LME, reflecting registration status and logistics.

    What sets the adjustment

Brand recognition, tonnage, payment terms and delivery point. Every quotation we issue states the reference, the quotational period and the adjustment.

Copper Concentrate Price per Ton — The Formula

Copper concentrate has no single “price per ton” — its value is calculated per dry metric tonne (DMT) from the lot assay and the LME, using the industry-standard formula:

    Price/DMT = (Payable Cu% × LME reference) − TC − RC − penalties + credits

Payable copper: Usually 96–97% of the assayed Cu content — smelters never pay for 100% of contained metal.

TC/RC: Treatment and refining charges deducted by the smelter, negotiated per contract and quoted per tonne and per pound of copper.

Penalties: Deductions for deleterious elements such as arsenic, bismuth or fluorine above contract thresholds.

Moisture: Settlement is on dry tonnes — moisture (typically 6–9%) is determined at inspection and deducted from shipped weight.

Copper Price in Zambia & Congo (DRC)

Buyers often search for a country-specific price, but Zambian and DRC copper settle against the same global LME benchmark as material from Chile or Peru. What changes by origin is the commercial packaging around the benchmark: brand registration status, inland haulage from the Copperbelt or Katanga, port charges at Dar es Salaam, Durban or Lobito, inspection costs and the Incoterm quoted (FOB, CFR or CIF).

That is why two offers for the same product can differ, and why the basis matters more than the headline figure. The discount or premium applied to the LME is set per lot, in Zambia and the DRC alike. Copper suppliers in Zambia and copper suppliers in DRC set out the origin-specific detail, and our due diligence service covers the counterparty checks.

    Copper Price Questions Buyers Ask

What is the copper price today?

Physical copper is quoted against the London Metal Exchange (LME) Official Price, which is set each trading day. Cathodes trade at LME plus or minus a premium or discount depending on brand, origin and delivery terms; concentrate is settled on payable copper minus treatment and refining charges. Because the LME moves continuously, any figure printed on a webpage goes stale within hours — request a quotation and we confirm the live LME-based price for your specific product, tonnage and destination.

What is the copper cathode price today?

Copper cathode offers are expressed as the LME Grade A reference price plus or minus a negotiated premium or discount. LME-registered brands typically command LME or a premium; non-LME African brands of equivalent Cu-CATH-1 quality usually trade at a discount to LME.

What is the copper price in Zambia?

There is no separate "Zambia copper price" — Zambian cathodes and concentrate are priced against the same LME reference used worldwide, adjusted for brand, logistics and delivery terms from the Copperbelt. What differs in Zambia is the cost structure: inland haulage to Dar es Salaam or Durban, export documentation and inspection are factored into the FOB or CIF quotation.

What is the copper price in Congo (DRC)?

DRC copper from the Katanga belt is likewise quoted against the LME at the time of offer. Katanga cathodes are often non-LME registered brands of equivalent quality and typically price at a modest discount to LME, reflecting registration status, tonnage and delivery point. We state the reference, the quotational period and the adjustment in writing with each quotation.

How much is copper concentrate per ton?

Copper concentrate is priced per dry metric tonne (DMT) using the formula: payable copper (usually 96–97% of the contained Cu grade) multiplied by the agreed LME reference, minus treatment charges (TC) and refining charges (RC), minus penalties for impurities such as arsenic, plus any precious-metal credits. A 25% Cu lot therefore has a very different value from a 40% Cu lot, and both move daily with the LME.

Why do you not publish a live price number on this page?

Because in physical copper trading a stale or approximate number is worse than none. Serious buyers check the LME; the commercial question is not the benchmark but the premium, discount, payables and charges applied to it for a specific lot. We state the pricing basis honestly and confirm exact figures at quotation — the same way the trade itself works.
