Millberry bare bright copper wire scrap, ISRI grade, baled for container loading

Copper wire and scrap covers a family of grades traded worldwide by ISRI specification: bare bright copper wire (Millberry), 8mm copper wire rod, and No. 1 and No. 2 copper scrap. It is the principal feedstock of secondary smelters and recycling mills, and it is bought on a combination of grade, cleanliness and verified weight.

SokoDolla supplies copper wire and scrap to recyclers, smelters and traders, sourced from verified producers in East and Central Africa. We verify the counterparty and its export documentation, attend the physical inspection of the material, and supervise weighing at loading.

Scrap is the category in which misrepresentation is most common, because grade and cleanliness are judgement calls that photographs cannot settle. Verification at source is not a formality here; it is the difference between the material you contracted for and the material that arrives.

    Buyer-Side Verification

What We Verify Before You Commit

We verify the counterparty, applicable licences, authority to sell, product documentation and independent inspection requirements before a buyer commits. Every engagement follows the SokoDolla Verification Standard.

Company registration and export licence confirmed against the national registry
Authority to sell and legal title to the material confirmed
Physical inspection of the scrap at the warehouse — grade, cleanliness and contamination assessed
Weight verified independently at loading rather than accepted on the seller’s declaration
Samples drawn where the grade warrants laboratory confirmation of copper content
Confirmation that the material is lawfully sourced and not the proceeds of theft or infrastructure vandalism
Sanctions, adverse-media and litigation screening on the counterparty and its directors

    Understanding the Grades

Millberry, or bare bright copper wire, is the highest scrap grade: clean, unalloyed, uncoated copper wire of 99.9% purity or better, free of burnt wire, brittle wire and any tin or nickel coating. It commands a price close to the LME because recovery is near-total.

No. 1 copper scrap covers clean, unalloyed, uncoated copper clippings, bus bar and tubing free of solder and fittings. No. 2 covers miscellaneous unalloyed copper with some oxidation, paint, solder or attachments, and prices at a wider discount to reflect lower recovery. Wire rod at 8mm ETP is a manufactured product rather than scrap, produced to C11000 specification.

Because these grades price very differently, the commercial risk in scrap is grade misdescription: material offered as Millberry that proves on arrival to be No. 2 with coated or burnt wire. Physical inspection before shipment is the only reliable protection.

    A Note on Pricing Realism

Millberry sells at a modest discount to the LME copper price, typically in the region of 90% or more of the metal value, because a recycler can recover nearly all of the contained copper. The exact figure follows grade, tonnage, packing and delivery terms, and we state the basis in writing with every quotation.

Every lot we quote is priced from the assayed grade against the LME reference on the day, with the deduction and the quotational period set out in the offer. Independent inspection at loading confirms the grade the price was built on, so the figure you agree is the figure the material supports.

    Documentation Per Consignment

A complete document set is a condition of every shipment we support. Each item below is verified rather than accepted at face value.

    • Certificate of Origin issued by the local Chamber of Commerce
    • Export permit and, where applicable, scrap-dealer licence
    • Certificate of change of ownership
    • Certificate of analysis where laboratory assay has been carried out
    • Signed commercial invoice, packing list and weight tally at loading
    • Full set of clean-on-board Bills of Lading
    • Marine insurance policy (CIF terms)

    Frequently Asked Questions

    What is Millberry copper?

Millberry is the trade name for bare bright copper wire: clean, unalloyed, uncoated copper wire of at least 99.9% purity, free of burnt or brittle wire and free of any tin or nickel coating. It is the highest-value copper scrap grade.

    How is copper scrap priced?

Scrap is priced by reference to the LME copper price, discounted according to grade and expected recovery yield. Millberry trades closest to the metal value; No. 1 and No. 2 grades trade at progressively wider discounts.

    How is weight verified?

Weight is verified independently at loading — by weighbridge and container tally, witnessed by our inspector or an appointed agency — and recorded on the packing list and tally report. It is never accepted on the seller’s declaration alone.

How do you confirm the scrap is lawfully sourced?

We confirm the supplier holds the applicable dealer and export licences, verify title to the material, and review the chain of acquisition. Copper theft from power and telecoms infrastructure is a recognised problem in the region, and we will not proceed where the provenance of the material cannot be established.
